Well…
October 25th, 2006
You don’t pay attention for a week, and suddenly everything is topsy-turvy…. I visited rapidshare to upload the new record, and I found this message on my premium account “Unfortunately all drives of RapidShare.de are full right now.” WTF?!?! Are they in trouble? I am paying for an account to upload these records, I hope they don’t fold! Anyone?

Rapidshare.de –> Rapidshare.com
Thanks to Jean’s Music Blog, I’ve made the transition. If you have a premium account and haven’t figured it out yet (I didn’t manage to) here’s the deal:
- look on the Premium Zone page on Rapidshare.de; next to your account’s expiration date, there’s a long number in parentheses—copy that number
- go to rapidshare.com
- click “join premium”
- scroll down to the “Rapidshare.de Member?” banner and click that
- paste the number you copied in the first step and click Create Account.
- a window pops up with your new account # and password (also emailed to you)
- proceed as before
Dunno if this will be a big screw-over when all is said and done, but with “all drives of RapidShare.de are full” there’s not much choice that I can see.

Hello Brett!
Thanks very much! I wonder why they didn’t email us, or at least post instructions on the rapidshare.de website?

no problem…I confess that I took it on Endless Mike blog.
Thanks for your blog.

I, too, didn’t see the “.de member” link: it is obscure. For those of us who pay for the hosting, I’d think they’d care that we make the transtion successfully. The info isn’t in any of the top of the page links for the FAQs or the News. Pretty weird.

I don’t see your necessity for using Rapidshare at all – your own proprietary host,shoddity.com, works better and is more user-friendly than them all.

re Rapidshare
I don’t know why most people upload to Rapidshare. You can’t direct link, and only download, and if you don’t pay are limited in your downloads. There are so many free webstorage services out there that are hotlinkable. Some even provide you a player. Please look at http://podserve.biggu.com/ as an example.

Hi Rickdog,
I understand the rapidshare argument, but some people do pay for the service, and it does offer very fast download times.
I figured it was a good second bet if my site was not performing well. Since very few people seem to be using rapidshare, I plan to post to shoddity alone from now on. It really saves me upload time… which IS slow.
Thanks to everyone for their comments.
Best,
The Shodditor

have you looked at the free Gallery2 service?

Although it seems like a photo storage service, it can store any type of file of any size. You can hotlink and it’s fast.

Thanks rickdog…
For now, I plan to stick with posting on photoknow.com alone. I have plenty of bandwidth and space for the time being.
Best,
